Identification of Chytrid Fungus in NH Frogs

Last summer, Mariah Mitchell and I conducted a study to investigate whether Batrochochytrium dendrobatidis was present in NH frog populations. This fungus, also known as chytrid, has decimated amphibian populations in tropical areas around the world. 30% of the world's frogs are in severe decline because of the infection, which causes keratinization or hardening of the frog's sensitive skin, causing suffocation and ultimately death. Our study involved collection, sampling, and molecular analysis using PCR. In summer 2016, we will extend the study to include students from Epping High School in collection and analysis. We are grateful to Seacoast School of Technology in Exeter for collaborating with us and allowing us to use their lab for PCR and gel electrophoresis.
